The Transport Ministry has decided to decentralize the issuing of
driving licences by the Motor Traffic Department (MTD).
Accordingly, a new office to issue driving licences attached to the (MTD)
will be shortly opened in Hambantota. “Anyone can apply for a driving
licence from any District Secretariat and pass the both written test and
the trial at district level, but on line driving licence issuing system
is only available at the Department in Werahera,” a spokesman from the
Transport Ministry said.
He said that issuing of driving licences can be streamlined with the
decentralization.
The whole process in line with international standards is expected to
be carried out through the proposed new office to be set up in
Hambantota which will serve applicants coming from Galle, Matara and
Monaragala districts. The Ministry has already selected UDA land in
Hambantota for the building.
He said that the Treasury has already allocated Rs. 40 million to
modernize and computerize the new office in order to maximize its
performance and provide an efficient service to customers. |
