A senior Pakistani security official said yesterday he could not confirm a media report that Taliban leader Mullah Omar had been killed. "I am making queries," the official said, requesting anonymity.

Militants storm Pakistan naval air base, 13 dead

Taliban gunmen armed with rockets and explosives stormed a major naval air base in the heart of Pakistan’s biggest city, destroying two US-made surveillance aircraft and killing 13 personnel. It was the worst assault on a military base since the army headquarters was besieged in October 2009, piling further embarrassment on the armed forces three weeks after Osama bin Laden was found living under their noses.

Indonesia to host Non-Aligned Movement conference

After hosting the ASEAN summit, Indonesia is ready for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) conference slated for Monday in Bali, and poised to lead the 118-nation group in drafting a vision for the next 50 years, local media reported on Monday. Indonesia last chaired the NAM in 1992, just after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
