Attempt to open bank safe fails

An attempt by several persons to break open the safe of the Colombo South Samurdhi Bank Society had failed and the thieves had run away empty handed.

The suspects had entered the Colombo South Samurdhi Bank Society building adjoining the kachcheri building at Elvitigala Mawatha, Narahenpita at dawn on Saturday.

Colombo South Samurdhi Bank Manager Sumuduni Alwis told the Daily News that the padlock of the gate of the bank had been broken and the thieves had entered the bank after breaking a window. She said that the suspects had failed in their attempt to break the safe.

The manager said six employees who came to report for duty on Saturday had noticed that the gate was broken and informed the Narahenpita Police.

No suspect have been taken into custody so far.
