Part of stolen money recovered

The Manipay police have taken into custody a person alleged to have stolen Rs 400,000 from a person who was praying in a temple at Chankanai two weeks ago. The police have recovered a part of the money from his house and from the balance he had bought a motorcycle (Rs 135,000) radio set Rs 7,500 and jewels for his wife and children. The suspect Pathmavel (24), was produced before the Mallakam magistrate who remanded him for two weeks.


Partially burnt body found

A partially burnt body of a person was recovered by the Kopay police in a tobacco garden at Punnalaikadduvan North near Vembadi Kadai on April 17 night. A bicycle with its tyres burnt an identity card and a passport were also recovered in the garden by the police. The police suspect it was a planned murder. The deceased has been identified as Vythilingam Chelva Ganeshan of Grumpirai. The Kopay police are investigating.


Acid thrown at woman

Two unidentified persons barged into the house of a young woman who was having her dinner and threw acid on her body at Augustiar Veethi, Illavalai on Friday, April 15 night and ran away. Though there were many in the house she was singled out for the attack. The injured was Loreen Consent, 25, of Illavalai. The Illavalai police are investigating.


NHDA to build houses

Under the Northern Spring program the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) has come forward to build a thousand houses to the homeless resettlers in the North. Each settler will be given Rs 100,000 as subsidy and Rs 200,000 as an interest free loan.


Fishermen recover students body

The body of a student from Urumpirai has been recovered at Kerathivu by the fishermen on April 16.

The student has gone with his mates on an educational tour to Pooneryn. He had slipped down from a bridge and was carried by the water current. After a long search the fishermen found his body at Kerathivu.

The Chavakachcheri Acting Magistrate held the magisterial inquiry and ordered the police to send the body for a post-mortem examination and submit report. The deceased was identified as Srikanthan Nimalan, 14, of Urumpirai.
