January export earnings increase

Growing momentum in all sectors:

Export earnings in January marked a significant 72 percent growth accounting close to US $ 900 million compared to the corresponding month last year. Central Bank Deputy Governor Dharma Dheerasinghe said this is a remarkable growth for our export earnings.

Self-employment loans :

North East opens 121 new bank branches

A total of 121 new bank branches and service centres have been set up in the Northern and Eastern provinces in 2010. In the Northern province 36 bank branches and in the Eastern province 32 bank branches have been established.

UNWTO Secretary General Dr Taleb Rifai visited the historic Sigiriya rock fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site yesterday. Dr Rifai is in Sri Lanka to attend the 23rd UNWTO Annual Conference of South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific and UNWTO Conference - Mainstreaming Tourism in the Media. The conference is being held in Colombo and begins today and continues for three days (March 24-26). The event is organized as part of Sri Lanka Tourism’s major promotional campaign: Visit Sri Lanka 2011. Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion acting Managing Director Malraj Kiriella accompanied the Secretary General.
