Women and Osteoporosis:
Ministry denies advertiser's claim

The Health Ministry yesterday debunking an advertisement which stated
that every three women in Sri Lanka suffer from Osteoporosis, said this
fact was false.
The truth
Osteoporosis is due to many
reasons. Lack of calcium is only one of them. |
"An advertisement alleges that one in every three women in Sri Lanka
suffer from Osteoporosis. This fact is inaccurate and not true at all,"
Health Ministry Media Coordinator W M D Wanninayake said. "Health
Minister Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the Director General
(Health Services) to take action against in this regard. A special
meeting was held with a panel of specialist doctors in connection with
this issue," he said.
"A team deployed by the advertiser 'screen' customers for
Osteoporosis in supermarkets and shops. After 'screening' they say about
90 percent of the 'screened' customers have Osteoporosis and should
drink a certain brand of milk," Wanninayake said. According to
specialist doctors no study or survey has been carried out to prove that
one in every three Sri Lankan women suffer from Osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis occurs due to many reasons. Lack of calcium is only one of
them. The Ministry will carry out awareness programs in this regard
soon, he said.
