Moves to prevent impersonation

Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has advised District Returning Officers to take all precautionary measures to prevent the votes of dead persons or those living abroad being cast at the upcoming election.

The Elections Department has placed a special mark on the ballot papers of those who are dead and those living abroad to identify them clearly.

The District Returning Officers have been advised by the Elections Commissioner to advise all Polling Officers regarding this. Polling Officers will pay special attention to prevent impersonation.

The Elections Department also requested voters not to keep in their custody or handover any polling cards belonging to a dead person or persons living abroad. Casting such a vote is illegal.

Polling Officers have powers to take action against any person retaining polling cards of dead persons or those living abroad. DSA
