Fishermen to be insured

The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry will introduce a fishermen's insurance scheme from March 23, said Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne.

Every fisherman will be included in this insurance scheme. This will activate as a credit insurance system, the Minister said.

Dr Senaratne was addressing the Diyawara Diriya loan scheme launching ceremony at the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) recently.

The Ceylinco Insurance PLC has collaborated with the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry to provide the insurance scheme, Minister added.

The Minister said the bereaved families of the fishermen who faced mishap in sea would be given Rs 100,000 through the insurance scheme. Fishermen can claim for this investing Rs 750, he said.
