Syria warns of foreign intervention in Lebanese crisis
Syria: Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad warned Saturday of the threat
of outside interference in the Lebanese political crisis. In a meeting
with the Progressive Socialist Party leader Druze Walid Jumblatt, Al
Assad discussed events in the neighbouring nation, currently paralyzed
by the collapse of the Saad Hariri Government after 11 of his 30 Cabinet
Ministers resigned last Wednesday.
According to official sources, they also discussed the possible
consequences for the Middle East of disagreements on the work of a
UN-sponsored court, and agreed it was important to be aware of the risk
of “foreign interference,” referring to US and French pressure to keep
Hariri in power despite a lack of consensus among political forces.
They also examined what the Syrian news agency SANA quoted as
“decisions and solutions in the hands of Middle East peoples, based on
their own interests (of the region).”
The result of the talks between Al-Assad and Jumblatt, who expressed
his opposition to the court’s approach to the probe, might be crucial.
