More funds for children’s nutrition

The Government has allocated Rs 2,800 million from the 2011 Budget for enhancing schoolchildren’s nutritional standard, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardene said.

He said this is an increase of four fold when compared with Rs 700 million allocated for same in 2006.

The Minister expressed these views at a function in Meemurai, Kaikawala Junior school on January 14 to launch the national program to enhance schoolchildren’s nutritional standard.

Under this program implemented by the Education Ministry together with Health and Economic Development Ministries the World Food Program will provide schoolchildren with mid day meals.
