Mahamaya Girls College Kandy (girls) and Trinity College (boys) won
the Age group championship while the Novices Championship was carried
away by Hillwood College (girls) and Kingswood College (boys) at the
Sixth Swimming Championship of Central Province Aquatic Sports
Association (CEPASA) worked off at the Dharmaraja College Swimming Pool
in Kandy on Sunday.
Over 700 Swimmers from 27 schools from the Central Province took the
plunge in this biggest swimming meet ever to be held at this complex.
Trinity College led by Sri Lanka's Swimming captain Heshan Unamboowe
ran out easy winners in the age group championship for boys by totalling
785 points which had a clear 521 point lead over their closest rival
Kingswood College who totalled 264 points.
In third place was Colombo International school (Kandy Branch) with
129. This will give some indication to the extent the lions dominated
this competition in the water.
Skipper Heshan Unamboowe himself turned out to be the key performer
for his team by winning all four events he participated in the 50 metres
backstroke, 50 metres butterfly stroke, 200 metres Individual Medley and
200 metres freestyle to maintain his unbeaten record in this
championship.
This was the sixth successive year in which Trinity College had won
the Age Group championship at this annual CEPASA swimming meet.
Heshan Unamboowe was also adjudged the champion swimmer over 16
years.
Trinity College also swept the boards in the individual championship
by carrying away the five age group championship awards.
Mahamaya Girls College led by Imesha Malalasekera won the age group
championship for girls for the sixth year in running by accumulating 804
points against the 284 points by the second placed Hillwood College.
A breathtaking lead of 520 points which stamped their class.
In third place was Kandy Girls High school with 138 points.
Madhavee Weeratunga who represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Games in
India last month put up a fine performance by winning all four events.
She participated in 50 metres, 100 metres and 200 metres freestyle
and 50 metres butterfly.
Her excellent performance won her the award champion swimmer over 16
years.
But it was in the under 16 age category that a tense struggle was
witnessed between Ayeshika Jayawardena of Mahamaya Girls College and
Dilki Perera of Kandy Girls High School.
Ayeshika Jayawardena a very talented swimmer won the 50 metres
butterfly stroke, 50 metres breaststroke and the 200 metres Individual
Medley. But had to play second fiddle to her opponent in the 100 metres
freestyle.
The up and coming Dilki Perera won the 200 metres freestyle, 50
metres backstroke and 100 metres freestyle.
But her waterloo was in the 50 metres butterfly stroke when she was
placed second with both swimmers having the identical record of 3 wins
and a second place, they were adjudged joint champions in the under 16
age category.
When you analyze the girls age group individual championship the
overall champions Mahamaya Girls College had won one and two others
jointly while Hillwood College had won two and another jointly which
means the latter had performed well individually. Had they fielded more
swimmers they could have improved on their performance.
Novices Championship
Kingswood College won the Novices championship for boys with a total
of 291 points and the second placed Trinity College were 84 points
behind with 207 points. St Anthony's College secured the third place
with 105 points.
Hillwood College was given a very close fight by Mahamaya Girls
College before they won the Novices championship for girls by
aggregating 198 points. The runners-up Mahamaya Girls College scored 177
points. In third place was Gateway College, Kandy with 78 points.
Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan-Judge of the Supreme Court in the
Republic of the Maldives was the chief guest and he distributed the main
