Need for purified water

According to a survey conducted by the health authorities revealed that 90 percent of drinking water in community water projects in Matale district which were implemented by the Government under the World Bank’s fund, is unfit for consumption.

It is further mentioned that 205 water samples were tested while 125 samples of were unfit for consumption.

Therefore a water purification method should be introduced to the community organizations concerned.


Missing

S R Somasuntharam of Kotahena has complained to the Mullaitivu Police that his son Somasuntharam. Mahendirakumar (40) had been missing since April 8, 2009. He is about 5’ 1’’ in height.

He had been living at Vanni in the Mullaitivu District, Pudumatalan area. Any information about him could be given to the nearest police station, or 0777342506, 0112436136 or 20 1/3 Kotahena Street, Colombo 13.


Action against illegal tour guides

The Tourist Board will take action against illegal tour guides who operate in tourist zones especially in areas like Kandy, Dambulla, Sigiriya, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.

The Tourist Board said, that legal action would be taken against tour guides who operate without Tourist Board approved licence.


Awards for tsunami children

The children in tsunami hit families who have lost one or both parents received Rs 2,500 each to purchase school stationery.

The donation was made at the Chief Minister’s Office, Hambantota by the National Child Protection Authority. Twenty five children received the award.


Rains affect poultry farmers

The torrential rains experienced recently in the North Western Province has caused extensive damage to poultry farms in several areas.

This has resulted in heavy losses to poultry farmers and the increase of price of eggs and chicken.

Poultry Farmers’ Association President Sarath Ratnayake told the media that the poultry producers are not in a position to meet the increasing demand for eggs during the festive season.

The President of the Poultry Farmers’ Association said that the poultry farmers in the North Western Province met more than 50 percent of the country’s requirements of eggs.


Eggs available from today

Cooperatives and Internal Trade Ministry, yesterday said that imported eggs would be available in Lak Sathosa outlets from today noon, according to the Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando.

The retail price of an egg would be Rs 12. The wholesale price would be Rs 11. The eggs are currently sold at Rs 15 and 16 in the open market and the Minister hopes the current prices would go down with the influx of imported eggs to the market.

The Minister said that one million eggs would be imported every two days, until prices come down in the open market.


Deadly call

A motorcyclist who was talking on the handphone died when the motorcycle ran off the road and crashed into a tree.

A Madushanka Jayathilake, 20, of Galewela, Bambaragaswewa had been talking with his girlfriend during the incident, police said. This was revealed at the inquest held on his death by Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, Ragama Hospital Dr H P G G de Alwis.

Gampaha Hospital JMO Dr M Sivasubramaniam held the autopsy. The inquirer recorded a verdict of accidental death.


Deadly blow

A man was beaten to death with an iron bar at Mathale Junction in Anuradhapura last Sunday. According to police, the victim's brother-in-Law had committed the alleged crime in the evening.

Surange Wijeratne of Kurundankulama, Anuradhapura died while being taken to the hospital.

Police said the accused and Wijeratne had taken liquor together at a birthday party.

The accused had assaulted Wijeratne later in the evening following a family dispute.


Faculty for women in politics

The opening ceremony of a Faculty for Women in Politics will be held at the Kandy Lake Club at Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha, Kandy today at 11 am. Chairperson of the Faculty's Advisory Board Nimalka Fernando and Central Provincial Council Member Shanthini Kongahage will be the chief guests.

 


Rs 7 m worth community projects

Twelve Community projects will be implemented at village level in the Panwila Divisional Secretariat area. The estimated value of these projects is Rs 7 million.


Coop mini shop opened

A Co-op mini shop at the Ambatenna town was opened by Wattegama MPCS Union Chairman, D B Wijetunga recently.


Record fines from illicit liquor

Alawwa Police has collected Rs 5,011,620 as fines from illicit liquor cases filed at the Warakapola Magistrate's Courts last year.


WB to fund Bandaraela renovation

The Bandaraela at Wawinna, Wattegama will be renovated at a cost of several million rupees.

The World Bank (WB) is funding the project.

Wattegama Govijana Pradeshiya area residents said, the Bandaraela remains dilapidated as a result of non maintenance. Three hundreds of acres of paddy were being cultivated utilising water of the Bandaraela.


Guru Gammana to be established

The Central Provincial Council will establish "Guru Gammana" in the Central Province for teachers who work in difficult areas.

The "Guru Gammana" was established at Hasalaka-Ududumbara, Panwila, Walapane, Medadumbara and Dumbara areas.


Appointment letters presentation

A batch of 185 Management Assistants recruited to the Central Province Public Service will receive their appointment letters from Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa at a ceremony at the Governors Office Auditorium on December 29 at 9 am.


Sathi Pirith Pinkama

A Sathi Pirith Pinkama and a Dorakada Asna desana to invoke blessings on the country and people and transfer merit on departed war heroes will be held at the Sri Sugatharama Viharaya Anuradhapura from 9 pm on December 31 to 6 am on January 8 under the patronage of Ven Eswatte Sumanasiri Thera.


Handloom machinery exhibition

'The Ransalu National Handloom Machinery exhibition 2010' organized by the Industry and Commerce Ministry to promote indigenous traditional industries will be held at the BMICH Colombo from December 28 to 30. The exhibition will be open to the public daily from 10 am to 10 pm.
