Vegetable prices to go up - Dambulla traders

The traders operating through the Damgulla Economic Centre warned that the high price of vegetables would increase further due to heavy rains experienced in the main vegetable producing areas.

Heavy rains have affected vegetable cultivation. Dambulla Traders Association President U R Dayanandasiri said vegetables were in short-supply and that the Dambulla Economic Centre was not in a position to meet the country’s vegetables requirement.

He pointed out that the demand for vegetables had also increased during the festive season.

Meanwhile retail traders said the unprecedented difference between wholesale and retail prices was due to the wastage of large stocks of vegetables compelling them to lower the losses from the balance stocks.
