PSC tells Minister:

Solve University violence

The Patriotic Students Centre (PSC) has requested Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake to intervene and immediately solve the University violence.

“We know there are problems in the University system but protesting and spreading violence is not the answer,” PSC Chairman Sujith Mutukumara said.

“We asked the Minister to discuss with the Students’ Union and solve these problems,” he said.

Wildlife lecture

Former International Court of Justice Vice-President, Emeritus Law Professor Monash University, Australia and a former Justice of the Supreme Court and the author of many publications Justice CG Weeramantry will deliver a public lecture on "Tread lightly on the earth: religion, the environment and the human future" at the Auditorium of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS), No. 120/10, Vidya Mawatha, Off Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7 on November 11 at 6 pm.

The lecture will be under the auspices of the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society of Sri Lanka.


One dies in collision

A motorcyclist who collided head on with a van at Diganwewa in the Chilaw-Anamaduwa Road died on the spot Monday evening.

Chilaw Police have taken into custody the van and its driver.


Flying squad pounce on power pirates

A flying squad from the Electricity Board and police raided power pirates in Vadamarachchi. They arrested 300 persons in a raid conducted in Vadamarachchi from Tondamannair to Manalkaddu. Illicit power pirates from Point Pedro, Nelliyaddy and Manalkaddu were taken into custody.


Sickly dinner puts undergrads in hospital

Nine students of the Ruhunu University Science Faculty were admitted to the Matara General Hospital following food poisoning Monday after dinner. The students are undergoing treatment at ward 17 of the hospital.


Thera passes away

Chief incumbent of Udunuwara, Gallangolla Maha Viharaya, Kandy Mulgampola Thumbomaluwa Viharaya Uduwinna Sri Sumanaramaya Most Venerable Walmoruway Dhammaloka Thera of Ramananaya sector passed away on October 31 at the age of 85. The cremation will take place at Viharaya Adahana Maluwa on November 4 at 2.30 pm.


Employment for residents

Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister Douglas Devananda said priority would be given to the people of Pachilapallai for employment at the Elephant Pass saltern to be opened soon. The Minister gave this assurance when he met the people on October 2 at Pallai. The saltern will be opened by the Department of Small Industries of which Minister Douglas Devananda is the Minister.


Peace procession

A universal religious procession titled Peace and Shanthi began in Jaffna on Monday to foster racial harmony. Sri Lanka Freedom Tamil Federation Secretary S Jryarajah who organized the massive procession said the procession would reach Hambantota on November 19, the day the first ship would enter the Hambantota harbour.


Fire

A grocery shop at Kalviyankaddu junction adjacent to the Kalviyankaddu fair was completely gutted by fire on November 1 night.

The cause of fire is believed to be a short circuit. People in the neighbourhood doused the fire immediately preventing it spreading to adjoining shops.
