Oldest tree and monastery preserved in Sri Lanka
Azwer tells World Parliamentarians :
As a unique result of the Biodiversity Conservation, the oldest tree
and the oldest sanctuary with documented history in the world were
located in Sri Lanka at the ancient capital of Anuradhapura and
Mihintale, said MP AHM Azwer to delegates attending the
‘Parliamentarians and Biodiversity Forum’ held at the International
Press Conference Hall at the Nagoya Congress Centre in Japan.
Drawing historical facts, Azwer said Biodiversity Conservation, the
theme of the Conference, is not entirely new to Sri Lanka. “The island
nation has had this tradition ever since King Devanampiyatissa of the
3rd Century BC embraced Buddhism brought to the country by Buddhist
missionary, Arahat Mahinda, son of Emperor Asoka, who was concurrently
ruling India, this wonder was made possible,” he told World
Parliamentarians.
Azwer further stated that many topics thoroughly discussed at the
GLOBE International moot in Nagoya has been encapsulated in the policy
statement of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, enunciated in the President’s
election manifesto.
Conservation of coral gardens, the respect given to fauna and flora,
the creation of a green country, a clean environment for a sustainable
future, creation of beautiful cities.
GLOBE International Vice President Barry Gardiner MP (UK), chaired
the sessions, while Secretary-General Adam compered.
Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan addressed via video.
Japanese Environment Minister Ryu Matsumoto delivered the keynote
