RMV special unit to nab forgeries

A special unit will be deployed to nab those forging vehicle
registration documents outside the premises of Motor Traffic Department.
Transport Deputy Minister Rohana Kumara Dissanayake told the Daily
News it is reported that several gangs are engaged in forging documents
and swindling money from the people who come to the RMV for their
vehicle registrations.
“A number of complaints from the public who have been cheated by
these gangs were received by the Ministry and legal actions are being
taken against them,” the Deputy Minister said.
The Deputy Minister further said it is revealed that several
employees attached to the RMV were involved in this racket which has
expanded on a large-scale.
“We will take stern action against employees if they are found guilty
of these illegal activities,” the Deputy Minister said.
These parties are engaged in issuing fake driving licences by using
fraudulent chassis numbers and both the Police Department and Custom
Officers have arrested a large number of vehicles with fraudulent
chassis numbers.
According to Police statistics, drivers who had used fraudulent
driving licences were responsible for a number of road accidents which
occurred in the recent past. He said a special unit comprising eight
officers will initially be set up at the Transport Ministry.
They will work together with the officials of the Police Department
to carryout the raids. Two units will also be established in the RMV
premises in Verahera and the Sri Lanka Transport Board head Office in
Narahenpita shortly.
