Second SLMA convocation honours fallen officers, awards diplomas
The second convocation to award Diplomas to 43 serving officers at
the prestigious Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) at Diyatalawa, now
earmarked to be recognized as a full-fledged University, took place
Saturday morning with Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath
Jayasuriya, as the Chief Guest.
The day’s proceedings commenced as graduates in procession walked to
the auditorium, to be followed by the arrival of SLMA Commandant,
Brigadier Ruwan Kulatunge and at University of Sabaragamuwa Vice
Chancellor Prof Mahinda Rupasinghe and other guests.
A two-minute silence to honour the fallen war heroes and late SLMA
veterans was also observed.
About 43 serving officers in the ranks of Captains and Lieutenants,
belonging to officer cadet intakes 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58 and 59 who
have completed their two-year Diploma in Military Studies program at the
SLMA, the academic institute, affiliated to the University of
Sabaragamuwa, received their credentials from the Army Commander during
a colourful parade.
In addition, the memory of three officers who had successfully
followed the Diploma, but died in action was posthumously honoured at
the same occasion with a special tribute.
Lieutenant General Jayasuriya, appeared deeply touched as parents of
the three War Heroes showed up before him, to receive the prestigious
accolades on behalf of their fallen sons.
The convocation ceremony was attended by many senior officers in the
Army, parents and next of kin of Diploma recipients.
A special memento was presented to the Army Commander Lieutenant
General Jayasuriya during his brief address at the ceremony spoke high
of the contribution the SLMA for grooming a thorough officer cum
gentleman. |
