Science Day

The Science Day of Ananda Balika Vidyalaya, Kotte organized by the Science and Maths Society of the school will be held on October 21 at 1.30 p.m. at the school main hall. A special lecture on Nano Technology will be delivered by Wayamba University Applied Sciences Faculty Senior Lecturer C N N Fernando. A special robot display will also take place.


Meth Seth Viskam - 2010

'Meth Seth Viskam - 2010' students' skills displaying exhibition and variety entertainment show will be held in Medawachchiya Maithripala Central College on October 18 and 19 under the patronage of Child Development and Women's Affairs Minister Tissa Karaliyadda.


Motherly love saves baby squirrel

A baby squirrel fallen from a tree was saved from being snatched by crows by a female toquz macaquz that instantly came down from a tree and chased the crows. She took the baby squirrel and climbed up a tree providing protection to it, despite attempts by crows to snatch her.

This happened Saturday noon at Mahiyangana town. A large crowd witnessed this moving scene.


Fowzie at UMNO

Disaster Management Minister A H M Fowzie left for Malaysia yesterday to attend the opening sessions of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) annual convention, the largest Political Party in Malaysia, representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).

The UMNO is the ruling party in Malaysia. It holds its Annual Convention from October 18 to 21, in Kuala Lumpur. The SLFP has nominated Minister Fowzie - Party's Senior Vice President to attend the Convention.

 


Announcer eyes longest lecture world record

Announcer Gamini Wijewardena is planning to set a World Record by delivering the longest lecture. He will begin to deliver the lecture Vishmitha Minisa Mihimatha a maga tomorrow at 9.00 am at the Ananda Coomaraswamy Studio. It will take place under the supervision of Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation Chairman Hudson Samarasinghe.

A team of doctors headed by Dr Geethanjana Mendis will also be present. Wijewardena is expected to break both the existing world record of the longest lecture of 32 hours and 25 minutes and the Sri Lankan record of 12 hours.


Moves to develop lobster industry

The NARA Fishing Technology Division is conducting research to develop the lobster industry in Sri Lanka, Fishing Technology Division Research Officer A A S H Athukorala said.

The division has taken measures to enhance habitats of spiny lobsters to increase foreign exchange earnings, she said.


Man eating croc killed

A 13-foot crocodile that attacked villagers and fishermen in Kattankudi was killed by villagers on Saturday. The animal's latest prey was a 60-year-old fisherman.
