PS chairman held in bribery case

Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Udeni Atukorala was arrested by Bribery Commission officials for allegedly soliciting a Rs 1.5 million bribe from the Bentara Paradeshiya Sabha chairman. It is reported that he had accepted the bribe to provide a permit to transport soil.

 

Anti-Dengue programmes in Kelaniya schools

Public Health Inspectors attached to the Kelaniya MOH Office have taken steps to launch anti-Dengue programmes in 20 schools under the purview of the Kelaniya MOH Office. The programme will be conducted on the instructions of Kelaniya MOH Dr Wasantha Rajapaksa.

 

Principal dies during training

[June 30 2013]

Raddolugama Pagnananda Madya Maha Vidyalaya Principal W.A.S. Wickramasinghe died following a stroke while exercising in the morning at the Rantambe Cadet Camp. Wickremesinghe, 52, was among the 97 participants in the month long military leadership training programme for school Principals.

 

Senior Minister leaves for Geneva

Senior Minister for International Monetary Co-operation and Deputy Minister of Finance & Planning Dr. Sarath Amunugama will leave for Geneva tomorrow to represent the Sri Lankan Government at the Annual Ministerial Review of the Economic & Social Council of the United Nations

 

President unveils Buddha statue

President Mahinda Rajapaksa unveiled a six feet Samadhi Buddha statue erected at the entrance to the Mihintale sacred area concurrent to the 2320 Mihindu Jayanthi commemoration. The President performed the first flower and oil lamp offering to the statue constructed by the Civil Defence Force (CSD).

 

Train crashes into parked lorry, one dead

One died and four passengers were seriously injured when a train bound for Galle crashed into a lorry at Angulana . According to Police sources, the train was packed with rush hour passengers knocked the train when it was parked close to the railway track.

 

Man nabbed with ganja in bag

[June 21 2013]

A 31-year-old male, resident in Paththinigama, Galnewa was arrested by Galnewa Police on afternoon while carrying 1.508 kgs of ganja hidden in a travelling bag after alighting from a Colombo-Anuradhapura bus at Paththinigama junction.

Children from the Seva Vanitha Army Branch managed Panagoda ‘Viru Kekulu’ and Manning Town ‘Viru Kekulu’ pre-schools and ‘Senehasa’ pre-school for children with special needs held their annual concert that showcased their skills and artistic talents at Mahanama College Auditorium, Colombo 3 on Friday. First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa was the Chief Guest and Defence Ministry Seva Vanitha Unit President Ayoma Rajapaksa was the Guest of Honour. Panagoda and Manning Town pre-schools have 202 children of Ranaviru families. The concert, replete with dancing features, Sinhala and English drama and song presentations, band displays, peacock dances, Christmas carols, fun-making items and many entertaining varieties, attracted both invitees and children. Health, education and infrastructure sectors:

More investments essential

There should be more investments towards health, education and infrastructure, former Central Bank of Sri Lanka Governor A S Jayawardena said. There is a need to create infrastructure facilities for the private sector on equitable basis since its contribution to the economy is huge.

Opposition mission fails

No public resolution at IPU:

Plantation Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe yesterday said that certain Opposition elements had failed in their bid to internationalize Sarath Fonseka’s case and tarnish the country’s image referring to the complaint made to the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU), Human Rights Committee for Parliamentarians. Reference was made in some newspapers during the weekend that the IPU will continue to follow up on the complaint made to the Human Rights Committee for Parliamentarians by some interested parties concerning Fonseka.

President tells failed administrators:

Hand back responsibilities

President Mahinda Rajapaksa Saturday called on failed administrators of state owned estates to hand back their responsibilities. The President said that he had received reports on administrators who were obtaining loans from all available sources even to pay workers’ salaries. The majority of these complaints are from the estate sector, he added. The President advised relevant officials to replace such ineffective administrators with efficient ones.

Sri Lankan soil not used to train terrorists - GL

Sri Lanka has found no evidence to suggest that the country’s territory is being used by terror group Let to train terrorists, External Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris, who is on a four-day visit to India, said Saturday. He said there is no merit in such claims. Earlier, one of the accused in the Pune bakery blast case had said LeT operatives were being trained in Lanka.
