Transplanting organs:

Ministry issues procedures, guidelines

Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Ravindra Ruberu by a circular dated October 14 has notified all provincial Health Directors, Divisional Health Directors and all Hospital Directors procedures and guildelines to be followed in terms of the Human Tissues Transplantation Act No. 48 of 1987 and the Criminal Act No. 15 of 1979 to implement the donation human organs national plan successfully, said a communique issued by the Health Ministry.

According through a set of guidelines drafted on the instructions of the Solicitor General, the Health Director has instructed relevant officials to make medical staff including Doctors and Nurses attached to Intensive Care Units aware of the procedures to be followed when obtaining organs from a clinically dead person for transplanting.

Legal obstructions that prevailed in transplanting of organs will be removed, the communique further stated.
