Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission:

TID to be summoned

Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) Chairman and Former Attorney General C R de Silva PC yesterday told the Daily News that the Terrorist Investigation Department (TID) officials would be brought before the Commission next Friday to inquire into the LTTE suspects and the hardcore members now in detention.

Silva made this comment while participating on an inspection tour to the Vellamullivaikkal, Nandikadal lagoon and Pudumathalan areas where the LTTE held civilians hostage to prevent the Security Forces from advancing to the area.

LLRC Chairman said that the Commission is expected to inquire into how the people detained by the Forces for rehabilitation were involved in the LTTE terrorist activities. He said he had been told that there are hardcore LTTE combatants and the members of the organisation who had been with the LTTE for longer period. “We will inquire as to how these former combatants got involved in the organisation,” he added.

The Chairman added that they have got information that the people who joined the organization during the final stage of the humanitarian operation and those who were forcibly employed by the LTTE are also in the detention camps for rehabilitation. He added that necessary recommendations would be made to the President to release them depending on the nature of charges they had.

The Chairman stressed that the release of this type of people in detention would help reconcile the people who underwent untold difficulties and agony due to the LTTE.

The Committee members visited the Pudumathalan areas where LTTE suicide boats, submarines and many other naval devices used for the attack on Navy were on display.

They inspected the LTTE leader’s underground bunker too.
