Environmental-friendly places:

Green cities in NWPC soon

The North Western Provincial Council has drawn a special plan to convert all cities and sub-cities in the Province into “green cities” under Chief Minister Athula Wijesinghe’s instructions.

The plan’s main objective is to make all cities environmental-friendly places. The Provincial Council will implement this plan in collaboration with the Wayamba Provincial Environment Authority, Provincial Health Ministry and local bodies. Kuliyapitiya town has been selected as the pilot project under this plan and is expected to complete work under the key plan by 2011.

Under this plan, waste matter collected in the town will be recycled using modern technology. Hotels will be inspected regularly with Public Health Inspectors’ assistance. “We have already brought the education standard of the Province to a better condition. Similarly, our second step is to give priority to protect the environment,” the Chief Minister said. “Although the Kuliyapitiya Town Council is governed by the UNP we have decided to develop it irrespective of any political disparity,” Wijesinghe said.
