Ananda College gymnasts dominate

Ananda College Colombo and Mary Immaculate Convent took major honours as they emerged boys and girls overall champions of the Gymnastic Championships of the 2010 National Schools Sports Festival worked off at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo.

Ananda College produced their best performance throughout the championship and made a clean sweep while carrying away the top awards for the best boys gymnasts in all three age categories.

The Anandians collected a total of 85 points and finished with a massive overall lead ahead of the second placed team St Benedict’s College Kotahena who emerged runners up at this tournament.

Ananda College also produced the best gymnasts in the form of Dilshan Kaveen (Under 15), Pamod Gunasekera (Under 17) and G C Patteperuma (Under 19) with all displaying a great amount of skill to outclass their opponents.

The Benedictines were able to collect 27.5 points and finished ahead of Royal College who finished in the third place with a total of 17 points. Meanwhile the girls from Mary Immaculate Convent produced a pleasing performance to clinch the girls overall title at this tournament.

The winners bagged a tally 20 points and edged out their closest rivals Vishaka Vidyalaya who had to be satisfied with the runners up position with a total of 17 points.

Mary Immaculate Convent also produced the best gymnast in the Under 17 Girls event category where Maheshika Rukini Perera stamped her class and authority to win her title convincingly. However in the girls Under 19 event Thilanka Abegunawardena of St Paul’s Girls College – Milagiriya came out with a dazzling performance to outclass the rest of the opponents and win the best gymnast award.

In addition Thimasha Pathirage from Vishaka Vidyalaya stole the limelight in the Girls Under 15 category where she produced a splendid performance to win the best gymnast award.

Prima is the main sponsor for this year’s National Schools Sports Festival which is now underway on a grand scale at multiple venues around Colombo. The co-sponsor is DSI and the meet is conducted by the Education Ministry.

01: Ananda College Colombo (85 pts.)

02: St Benedicts College Kotahena (27.5 pts.)

03: Royal College Colombo (17 pts.)

Overall champions – Girls

01: Mary Immaculate Convent (20 pts.)

02: Vishaka Vidyalaya Colombo (17 pts.)

03: St Paul’s Girls College - Milagiriya (15 pts.)

Best gymnasts:

U-15 Boys: A A Dilshan Kaveen (Ananda College)

U-15 Girls: Thimasha Pathirage (Vishaka Vidyalaya)

U-17 Boys: Pamod Gunasekera (Ananda College)

U-17 Girls: Maheshika Rukini Perera (Mary Immaculate Convent)

U-19 Boys: G C Patteperuma (Ananda College)

U-19 Girls: Thilanka Abegunawardena (St Paul’s Girls College - Milagiriya)
