PS chairman held in bribery case

Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Udeni Atukorala was arrested by Bribery Commission officials for allegedly soliciting a Rs 1.5 million bribe from the Bentara Paradeshiya Sabha chairman. It is reported that he had accepted the bribe to provide a permit to transport soil.

 

Anti-Dengue programmes in Kelaniya schools

Public Health Inspectors attached to the Kelaniya MOH Office have taken steps to launch anti-Dengue programmes in 20 schools under the purview of the Kelaniya MOH Office. The programme will be conducted on the instructions of Kelaniya MOH Dr Wasantha Rajapaksa.

 

Principal dies during training

[June 30 2013]

Raddolugama Pagnananda Madya Maha Vidyalaya Principal W.A.S. Wickramasinghe died following a stroke while exercising in the morning at the Rantambe Cadet Camp. Wickremesinghe, 52, was among the 97 participants in the month long military leadership training programme for school Principals.

 

Senior Minister leaves for Geneva

Senior Minister for International Monetary Co-operation and Deputy Minister of Finance & Planning Dr. Sarath Amunugama will leave for Geneva tomorrow to represent the Sri Lankan Government at the Annual Ministerial Review of the Economic & Social Council of the United Nations

 

President unveils Buddha statue

President Mahinda Rajapaksa unveiled a six feet Samadhi Buddha statue erected at the entrance to the Mihintale sacred area concurrent to the 2320 Mihindu Jayanthi commemoration. The President performed the first flower and oil lamp offering to the statue constructed by the Civil Defence Force (CSD).

 

Train crashes into parked lorry, one dead

[June 24 2013]

One died and four passengers were seriously injured when a train bound for Galle crashed into a lorry at Angulana . According to Police sources, the train was packed with rush hour passengers knocked the train when it was parked close to the railway track.

 

Man nabbed with ganja in bag

[June 21 2013]

A 31-year-old male, resident in Paththinigama, Galnewa was arrested by Galnewa Police on afternoon while carrying 1.508 kgs of ganja hidden in a travelling bag after alighting from a Colombo-Anuradhapura bus at Paththinigama junction.

Second MDG Progress Report launched:

Country’s poverty rates declining

Second Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Progress Report says that Sri Lanka’s poverty rates are clearly declining and country has succeeded in mobilizing a large volume of bilateral assistance in difficult times, with continued assistance from non-traditional and some traditional development partners.

Millennium Development Goals:

Sri Lanka on track

Sri Lanka is in the forefront of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) agenda. It has already achieved several MDGs, especially in the health and education sectors. Sri Lanka has also made great strides in poverty alleviation, child and maternal mortality rates and gender equality. Sri Lanka is on track to achieve the targets for most of the indicators by 2015, the Second Millennium Development Goals Progress Report said.

UNGA - Interest in post-conflict progress in Sri Lanka

The United Nations General Assembly that opened its 65th Session on September 14, will this week see Heads of State and Government gather for a three-day High Level Plenary Meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDG Summit), which will be followed by the annual general debate which features statements by Heads of State and Government, from September 23 to 30.

Agency racket busted

The Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau (CFIB) has uncovered a massive agency racket following the arrest of two suspects, a father and the son, from the Kandy Police Division. According to the investigation directed by CFIB Director Senior SP Maxie Proctor, a father, son and several other members of the same family had operated a agency office in the Wellawatta police area for several months and had collected over Rs 2.3 million from 39 persons promising to send them to England for higher studies. The CFIB had received 39 complaints upto yesterday.
