Thornton wins overall title

Englishman Chris Thornton had one of his finest moments at Victoria
when he put up a sparkling display to win the Overall Nett title at the
Monthly golf competition of the Victoria Golf and Country Resort which
was worked off at the Victoria Golf Course in Rajawella off Kandy.
The many award winning Victoria Golf Course was a picture of beauty
with the neatly laid fairways and with the weather keeping fine and it
turned out to be an excellent day for the golfers who participated.
But this day turned out to be one that belonged to Chris Thornton
from ‘Old Blighty’ as he was ahead in many competitions but the rules
said he could win only one. Playing to a handicap of 15 Chris Thornton
registered a Net score of 66 which was the best in the all entries
category which entitled him to win the Overall Net title. In second
place was that versatile golfer Sujeewa Lankatillake registering 68 Net
playing to a handicap of 5.
H. Boralessa finished third with 70 Net playing to a handicap of 17.
Others to register good Net scores were Mike Thornton 73. Tony Witham 73
(on a count back), Christ Holloway 74 (after a count back on the last
nine holes), Chamil Wickremasinghe 74, Nimal Wettimuny 74, Jyoti Haynes
75, Errol Johnston 76 (on a count back) and Steffan Hannsson 76. Sidath
Wettimuny 77, Richard Witham 77 and Ian Tait 77. (in that order after a
count back).
Sujeewa Lankatillake clinched the men’s gross title with a gross
score of 73 and he was followed by Chamil Wickremasinghe 79. Nimal
Wettimuny 80, Chris Thornton 81, Ian Tait 83, Chris Holloway 86, Sidath
Wettimuny 87 (on a count back), H. Boralessa 87, Steffan Honnsson 87,
Tony Witham 88 and Errol Johnston 89.
The Ladies Nett title went to Jyoti Haynes who registered a Net score
of 75 playing to a handicap of 22. In second place was Indira Tibblins
who got 79 Net playing to a handicap of 21.
Chris Thornton was on top of Men’s Division two Net competition with
66 Net, while Sujeewa Lankatillake was on top of Men’s Division one Net
competition with 68 Net with a lower handicap.
This competition turned out to be a well organized one with a large
number of expatriates participating and a bouquet should go to the
General Manager Errol Johnston, Marketing Executive Dhanushika Medagoda
and Caddie Master K. Sivakumar. |
