Sharmal and Nadir through

Junior National Tennis C’ships:

Sharmal Dissanayaka who played Yasas Dewage in a three setter in the quarter finals of the under 18 age group won the first set 6-2 lost the second 2-6 and made a strong come-back to win the third set 6 4. Sharmal will meet Vimuktha De Alwis while Amresh meets Irfan Inzam in the semi finals.

In the only other three setter of the day - Nadir Nazar won his match against Viranka Fernando in the quarter finals of the Boys Under 12 Championship match at the Junior nationals that are currently being played at the SLTA. After losing the first set 3-6, Nadir made a strong come back to win the next two sets 6-4,6-2. to make it to the semi finals. The other semi finalists in the age group are Joshua Jayaratne, Anthoney De Silva and Adhavan Pushparaj.

The under 10 Girls finals will be played at 8.30am today between Piyumi Wickramasinghe and Umeshi Ranaweera as expected. The Under 10 boys semi finals will be between Avindra Perera and Tharaka and S. Innthujan and Nuwantha Dissanayake.

In the under 14 age group – top seed Thisuri Molligoda makes it to the semi finals and so does Oshani Wickramasinghe. Sharmari Dissanayake beat Nishangan Nadarajah and Danushka Abeywardene beat Shehan Fernando 6-4, 7-6 to enter the semi finals.

The under 16 girls first semi final that will be played today will be between Shankari Thayakaran and Vinuri Wickramaratne. The other semi final will be between Dhanya Madugalle and Nilushi Fernando. The Under 16 boys semi finals which promises to be very interesting will be played between Shaveen Chinthaka and Aritha Weerasinghe with the other being Shabir Hussair versus Vimuktha De Alwis.

‘Tuesday promises to be a day full of interesting matches’ said tournament secretary Anujan assuring that if the rain holds out – all the finals will be played on Wednesday.
