new SLFP organizers appointed |

President Mahinda
Rajapaksa appointed new SLFP organizers for five
electorates. They received their appointment letters from
the President at Temple Trees yesterday. Presidential
Advisor Sajin Vass Gunawardena for Balangoda electorate,
Sarath Weerasekera for Dehiattakandiya, Padiyathalawa, Namal
Oya and Maha Oya areas in the Ampara district, Abdul Majeed
Mohammed Naushad for the Samanthurai electorate, Wasantha
Senanayake for the Mirigama electorate and artiste Geetha
Kumarasinghe has been appointed as the Benthara- Elpitiya
SLFP organizer for the Benthara-Elpitiya electorate. |
NHDA allocates Rs 125m for house construction

The National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) has allocated
Rs.125 million to construct 1,250 houses throughout the country
including the North and Eastern provinces.
According to NHDA sources, the Government will provide 50 percent of
the estimated cost. Funds from loan installments collected from its
district offices will be invested for the balance . Each district will
be provided with 50 houses under this project .
A loan of Rs.100, 000 will be granted to a family under this project
and the NHDA will provide the plan and technology.
The NHDA will use the labour force of the local community as far as
possible to construct the houses.
Awards ceremony
The International Primary/Junior/Secondary School Certificate
Examination 2009 awards ceremony will be held on June 28 from 2.30 pm to
5.30 pm at the Bishop’s College Auditorium - Colombo 03.
This year, over 400 students out of 1,500 who sat for the
examinations will receive awards.
AGM
The Annual General Meeting of the Swami Vivekananda Society will be
held on Friday, June 25 at 10.00 am at the Society Hall. President A.R.
Surendran P.C. will preside at the meeting. Members are kindly requested
to be present.
Poson Perahera
The annual Poson Perahera of the Matara-Totamuna ‘Jayamaha Viharaya’
will be held on June 25 - Poson Poya Day.
The Perahera will parade the streets in the Matara town with the
participation of tuskers, elephants, up country, low country and
Sabaragamuwa dances.
The Perahera is being organized by the Jayamaha viharaya- Totamuna,
Matara.
Poson sil campaign
Poson Sil campaigns will be held around Rambukkana area with over 200
students of the Diyasunnatha Kirthi Sri Rajasinha Raja Maha Viharaya
Dhahampasala observing Ata Sil. This will be held under the patronage of
Chief Sanganayake Ven. Kotagama Chandaratana Thera on Poson Full Moon
Day.
Rambukkana Dharama Dutha Centre will also conduct a mass Sil
campaign.
The meditation program will be conducted by Ven. Batuwatte Mahinda
Thera on the Poson Day.
Rambukkana Y.M.C.A. will hold a Kadala Dansala for the forth time at
the Hospital Junction on Poson Day.
Poson week
The Northwestern Province Provincial Council’s Education Ministry has
declared a special Poson week from June 22. All school heads in the
Kurunegala and Puttalam districts have been instructed to organize
religious programs.
A.M. Piyasoma, a senior school principal in Kurunegala told the Daily
News that 175,000 students and 15,000 teachers will observe sil on June
24 at their schools and meditation programs and dhamma discussion will
be conducted by Buddhist monk.
She pirated electricity to poach animals
Siri Wawage Matara Roving
A 45 year woman alleged to have tapped electricity to trap animals in
the Viharakele Forest Reserve was arrested and produced before the
Matara Chief Magistrate recently.According to police she had attached a
wire to the house electricity metre externally through a fuse to obtain
the power supply for the trap. Matara Chief Magistrate released the
suspect woman on personal bail of Rs. 3000.
Bethi Gee
Bethi Gee Saraniya, organized by the staff and students of the
Matugama C.W.W. Kannangara MMV to commemorate the 2600th Sambuddha
Jayanthi will be held at the school auditorium on Wednesday, June 23 at
4.30 p.m.
JICA AGM
The 38th Annual General Meeting and members’ get-together of the JICA
Alumni Association will be held at the Sasakawa Memorial Cultural Centre
Auditorium, Colombo 3 on June 26 at 5.00 p.m. Japanese Ambassador Kunio
Takahashi will be the Chief Guest.
Wimal to participate Ministers’ conference
Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities
Minister Wimal Weerawansa has left the island yesterday to participate
in a South Asian Countries Ministers’ Conference on Housing and Urban
Development, Ministry sources said. This conference will also
concentrate on housing problems in Sri Lanka. The Minister will present
Ministry’s future plans to the Asian members. Indonesia is hosting the
conference and 68 countries will participate.
University admission
Asela Kuruluwansa and Indika Polkotuwa
Peradeniya University Engineering Faculty will admit today 412 fresh
students. Engineering Faculty Dean Prof. S. B. Weerakoon said, this is
the first student batch admitted to the University system this year. |
