India’s Sharma fined for dissent
India batsman Rohit Sharma has been fined for showing dissent during
a 14-run defeat by the West Indies in a World Twenty20 Super Eights
match, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Monday.
Sharma was given out at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Sunday
when he gloved behind attempting a scoop shot off Kieron Pollard.
The dismissal was mired in controversy, when the batsman essentially
asked New Zealand umpire Billy Bowden to refer the decision to TV umpire
Steve Davis.
But the umpire decision review system is not in place for the
competition, and Bowden upheld his original verdict, following
consultation with his Australian on-field colleague Simon Taufel.
Sharma was charged with a level one offence under the ICC code of
conduct. As the batsman pleaded gulity, there was no need for match
referee Jeff Crowe, the former New Zealand batsman, to hold a full
hearing.
India complete its Super Eights programme against Sri Lanka at the
Beausejour Stadium in St Lucia on Tuesday, needing a victory and other
results to go their way to qualify for the semi-finals.
