Heart patient seeks help


M S Perera

Michael Stanley Perera of Thihagoda is suffering from an acute heart disease. He is receiving treatment at the Jayawardenepura Hospital and the consultant cardiologists of the hospital have advised him to undergo a surgery which cost Rs. 400,000.

Family members of the patient seek public donations to meet the requirement. Contributions can be credited to A/C 032-2-001-6-2514847 of the Uyanwatta People’s Bank Branch, Matara.

Baragama Upali

Baragama Upali, a retired teacher of Kahawala, Padukka has been diagnosed with kidney failure and recommended an urgent kidney transplant by National Hospital Consultant Nephrologist Dr. A.L.M. Nazar.

According to Dr. Nazar, the expenses related to the anti rejection therapy and investigations costing over Rs 200,000 have to be borne by the patient.

The patient says he is not in a position to meet this amount of money due to his present financial difficulties and requests donors and the public to assist him by sending whatever contribution to save his life.

All contributions should be remitted to the Account Number 8773110 of Bank of Ceylon, Padukka branch.

 


Two hand granades found in temple land

Chief Inspector, C.D. Gurusinghe of Police Headquarters Kebathigollewa said two hand granades were traced from a land belonging to Kebathigollewa, Handagala Purana Viharaya on March 10.

He revealed that the land the temple is situated is over 300 acres and during the past LTTE cadres were haunting in these lands.

The Chief Inspector suspects that three grenades may belong to them. Some villagers engaged in quarry blasting had seen the grenades and have reported to police.

The two grenades are under police custody at present and action would be taken to defuse them after court ruling is obtained, said the Chief Inspector.


Mini co-op city system expanded

The Wattegama Multi Purpose Cooperative Society will expand the Mini Co-op City system to provide more facilities for consumers.

Under this, four Mini Co-op City shops were opened meanwhile 12 Co-operative retial outlets operating in the area will be converted to Mini Co-op City shops.


Man drowns

A 67-year-old father of two drowned when bathing in Welamitiyawa Oya crossing the Pahalawewa area in the Galewela police division. He was identified as D.L. Premaratna, a resident in the area.

Van with cattle seized

Officers of the Bakamuna Police on foot patrol seized a van transporting cattle without a permit at Polathuwadiya and arrested four suspects in this connection yesterday morning. Police said there were 23 head of cattle inside the lorry including 7 buffaloes of which had two had died on transit.

The suspects were due to be produced before the Hingurakgoda Magistrate with the productions yesterday.


NCP War Heroes Day

The North Central Province Ranaviru Upahara program will be held at 9.00 a.m. on Friday before the Ranaviru Memorial Statue erected near the Anuradhapura Public Ground. The program will be held in concurrence with the Ranaviru Memorial National Program organized to pay tribute to national heroes.


Fowzie to discuss Haj quota in Saudi

Disaster Management Minister A. H. M. Fowzie left for Saudi Arabia leading Sri Lanka’s Haj delegation to discuss arrangements for Sri Lankan Haj pilgrims this year.

He will sign an agreement with the Saudi Haj Minister with regard to the number of pilgrims allowed, transport facilities and accommodation in Mina and Arafat. Fowzie will request the Saudi Haj Minister to increase the quota up to 8,000 pilgrims.


Somali pirates release 23 Lankans

Somali pirates have released twenty three Sri Lankan crewmen of a ship captured and held by them from March along with the vessel they were on board.

The twenty three member crew, including three captains were released yesterday at 1 p.m. by the pirates, senior Foreign Ministry official said.

The crew is expected to reach Falala in Oman in the vessel. They will be repatriated to Sri Lanka from Oman, Foreign Ministry sources said. They said the release of the crew was confirmed to the Ministry by Sri Lankan High Commission in London.


APDC today

The Asia Pacific Dental Congress (APDC), the world’s second largest dental conference, will open today, May 12 at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre in Colombo. The APDC will be held until May 16 under the theme ‘Clinical Excellence in Dentistry through Evidence, Knowledge and Technology’. More than 35 world renowned experts in the field of dentistry will participate.


Chaithya Vandana Puja

A Chaithya Vandana Puja at the Jethavanaramaya, Anuradhapura and a Sil program at Thanthirimale temple organized by the Gampaha, Dunugaha Pahansith Foundation will be held on May 15, 16 under the auspices of Jethavanaramaya Chief Incumbent and Rajarata University lecturer Ven Halmilleve Rathanapala Thera.


Seminar for Grama Niladharis

A selected group of 100 Grama Niladharis in the Nuwara Eliya District will attend a four day residential orientation seminar at the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat from May 18 to 21.

Government Information Department release said, Grama Niladharis attending the seminar would be given a thorough awareness on relevant laws and regulations, mediation activities and their duties as Government servants.

The program jointly organized by the Public Service Training Institute Centre for Policy Alternatives and the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat is funded by UNDPs equal access for Justice Project.


Vesak program

Sipnara International School at Athurugiriya has organized a Vesak program on May 24 and 25. The students will take part in offering of Pindapatha to the Sangha followed by Pirith chanting ceremony on May 24. The students will observe sil on May 25 from 8. a.m. to 12.30 p.m. A meditation program and lantern competition will also be held. The opening of the new Buddha Shrine room of the school will take place on the same day.

Nabbed with M 16 weapon

Anamaduwa Police checked a van plying on the Puttalam-Anamaduwa road on suspicion on Monday night and arrested two persons with an M 16 weapon and thirty live bullets in their possession.

Investigations are continuing to ascertain whether the suspects were on a secret mission to commit a crime.


Large stock of moonshine seized

Gampaha police officials have seized a large stock of illicit arrack at several places in the Gampaha Division.

Four persons were taken into custody in the arrests. They are from Gampaha, Yakkala, Udugampola areas. When those suspects were produced before Gampaha additional magistrate Indika Attanayaka they were fined Rs. 241,000. Raids were directed by Gampaha police.
