New Parliament meets on happy note
The inaugural session of the 14th Parliament
ceremonially took place yesterday commencing 8.45 am - the first
Parliament to assemble in a Sri Lanka free of terrorism, in over 30
years. It was also the first Parliament with a overwhelming presence
of ruling party legislature with the UPFA securing 144 seats of the
225-member assembly.

PM hails election of Speaker by consensus
Newly appointed Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne
said the people have given their mandate to this Government to
create an environment so that they could live peacefully and in
harmony irrespective of various differences. He wished that the

Happy to be Speaker in post war Parliament
Newly elected Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa yesterday
pledging to perform his duties in an independent manner,
safeguarding the dignity and decorum of Parliament upholding its
traditions said he was pleased to be elected to the office of the
Speaker in the first Parliament in the aftermath of the elimination
of LTTE terrorism.

The new Speaker
The newly elected Speaker of the 14th
Parliament, Chamal Rajapaksa is the older brother of President
Mahinda Rajapaksa who carries forward the great traditions of the
Rajapaksa family of Giruwapattuwa in the deep South.
