Happy to be Speaker in post war Parliament

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa

Newly elected Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa yesterday pledging to perform his duties in an independent manner, safeguarding the dignity and decorum of Parliament upholding its traditions said he was pleased to be elected to the office of the Speaker in the first Parliament in the aftermath of the elimination of LTTE terrorism.

Calling on all Members of Parliament to extend their support to safeguard democracy and the Parliamentary traditions the Speaker stated that the best stage to give voice to the public is the Parliament.

Any Member in the Assembly could voice the need of the public but democratically and in line with the provisions of the standing orders of Parliament safeguarding its decorum.

The Speaker also said that he considered his election to the office of the Speaker as a honour to his father D.A. Rajapaksa who was elected to the Second State Council in 1945 and later elected as a Deputy Speaker. Thanking all those Members who elected him unanimously to office and the voters of the Hambantota district who elected him to Parliament continuously since 1989 the Speaker Rajapaksa said that he would make all efforts to maintain the Parliamentary traditions and precedent using his 21 years of experience as a Parliamentarian.
