Fish at low prices for Avurudu

The Fisheries Corporation will provide fish at a lower prices than
the prevailing market price through their islandwide agencies during
Sinhala and Tamil New Year festive season.
Fisheries Corporation Marketing Manager Rohan Fernando said during
the festive season many fishermen are bound to curtail their fishing
activities. Therefore, prices of fish will be considerably high in the
market.
"We are ready to face the situation and provide fish at lower prices
than the market prices as a relief for consumers during the New Year
festive season," Fernando told the Daily News.
He said measures have been taken to supply fish throughout the
country through Fisheries Corporation agencies and Lak Sathosa outlets.
There are 140 stalls of the Fisheries Corporation and 158 Lak Sathosa
outlets in the country. They all will be supplied with fish from the
Fisheries Corporation to sell at lower prices. The President and
Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Felix Perera has advised the
authorities to supply fish at low prices as a relief to the consumers
during the Sinhala and Hindu New Year.
"We will adhere to the President's and the Minister's advice and
supply the maximum quantity of fish at low prices for the benefit of the
consumers," he added. Fernando reiterated that the Fisheries Corporation
has enough fish stocks to face the situation and also continue after the
festive season.
Steps had been taken to expand the number of Fisheries Corporation
stalls in the country. Another 10 stalls is to be set up. Around 150
fisheries Corporation stalls will be opened to provide a variety of fish
to the consumers.
Meanwhile, the Fisheries Corporation is in discussion with the Cost
of Living Committee and the Treasury to supply fish to Coop Cities
islandwide. This will give more opportunity for the consumers to buy a
variety of fish at low prices in different places during the New Year
festive season.
