The people are looking forward to consolidate the Government’s victory over terrorism by giving it a two thirds majority at the April 8 election, Export Development and Internal Trade Minister Professor G.L. Peiris said.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet press briefing, he said the people have clearly understood the importance of establishing a strong government. They are anxious to reinforce the victory achieved by the Government through the eradication of LTTE terrorism.

The Minister was referring to United Nations Secretary General’s decision to appoint a Committee to look into human rights related matters in Sri Lanka. The Minister pointed out that the decision goes entirely against the United Nations charter.

The UN was informed by 118 countries that the General Secretary’s decision is against the charter and the charter is being violated. The countries have further pointed out that UN should not intervene in the internal matters of any country, Minister Peiris said.

A report of the International Crisis Group, which is an independent moderate organization has pointed out that Tamil people in the country are against Eelam. But the Tamil diaspora is still thinking of Eelam.

Referring to the statements of former Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, Minister Peiris said that no Chief Justice in Sri Lanka or in the world has criticized the judicial system in any country.

“He has criticized the judiciary system in the country though Sri Lanka has a well established judiciary system. By doing so the confident of people in the judiciary is bound to fade.”

The European Union has expressed its happiness regarding the improvement achieved by the Government in relation to resettlement of IDPs and action taken with regard to child soldiers.

“The EU is fully satisfied with the improvement and the EU will consider granting the GSP concessions again,” Minister Peiris added. This indicate that the country is returning to normality. However more steps have to be taken such as removing emergency regulations.

The Opposition leader is attacking the heart of the country’s economy. “There is a clear difference between attacking a political party and the country’s economy,” the Minister said.
