Short Story Writing:
The Unexpected
Nirosha Kumari Vithana
Suranga smiled at the mirror. Hair is neat and smart. The captivated,
high branded shirt adds additional elegance to his appearance. The
odoriferous fragrance of highly expensive perfume is covering whole
body. Now .... everything is ok....!
Today Suranga is going to meet Surani, a girl from high society, rich
and educated. Suranga met her for the first time in the court complex
few mouths ago, when she came with her senior lawyer.
Though Surani is still a junior, she is much more familiar with legal
profession as she has grown up within a legal environment. Both her
parents are lawyers, her father Sarath Rajakaruna is a judge in the high
court and her elder brother is a prominent lawyer in the country.
However, there is no one else to give strength to Suranga to
establish himself in the legal profession. He tries hard to prove his
talent all the time, but it is not sufficient to reach his goals. These
disappoint him. Suranga realizes that Surani is interested in him
lately.
Suranga thinks that he could achieve his ambition with the assistance
of Surani. Though Surani is not a charmingly beautiful, she has money,
reputation, sophistication and in fact everything. Suranga feels that
this is an ideal opportunity to make use.
Suranga recalls his first affair in the faculty Tharaka Jayatissa was
a rustic girl and Suranga was mesmerized by her beauty even at the first
sight. They enjoyed maximum happiness over the four years in the campus.
But their romance lasted only during that period as Suranga stopped the
affair single mindedly.
Suranga forgot everything easily and refused to communicate with
Tharaka.
Suranga falsely complained that Tharaka had an another affair in her
village. Suranga felt that Tharaka was not a suitable partner for him
and he thought that she had very simple ideas. The rustic upbringing had
not sharpened her mind. She wanted to live without any change of the old
pattern except with a lot of money and high reputation. Suranga felt
that Tharaka’s ideology was useless and not progressive. So, he gave up
her.
Now Suranga is waiting for Surani, at the park for half an hour.
Surani came wearing a tight jeans and a T-shirt though it doesn’t add
any beauty to her plump body. Tharaka was like an angel compared with
Surani. But he thought it for himself.
‘I brought some cutlets for you,’ Surani said.
“Hmm.... delicious. I have never thought that you are such a clever
cook.”
Suranga bit a piece of cutlet in his mouth and looks at Surani in an
endearing manner.
‘Oh, this is not my product. Our sister-in-laws.’
Surani talks about her beloved sister-in-law every time she meets
him, fondly.
‘Oh, really please tell her that I like it.’
‘Suranga, she knows you. You are her batch mate in the faculty.’
Suranga glances at Surani, expecting what will come out of her mouth
next. He is scared as everyone had known his affair with Tharaka.
‘What else did she say,’ Suranga asked impatiently.
Suranga notes that there is nothing in Surani’s face to indicate a
change.
‘She recommended you and now I can. So I get my parents approval for
our marriage.’
A long sigh of relief from Suranga. A smile blossoms around Suranga’s
mouth.
‘Oh my God, tell her, I thank her a lot. What is her name?
‘Tharaka, Tharaka Jayatissa.’ Suranga squeezes his hand to realize
that he does not see a dream. And yet Surani’s sister-in-law may not
know who Surani’s lover is.
