Daily News Business.
He said the CEB expects to generate 600 MW under the phase II. It is
scheduled to complete by the latter part of 2013.
The total investment of phase II is around US$ 891 million. It is
provided by the Exim Bank of the Chinese Republic. The Sri Lankan
Government provides another Rs 10 billion for the power plant.
The main objective of the project is to cater to the increasing
demand for electricity and to supply steady and low cost electricity to
the National Grid.
Due to the rapid growth in several industries and the accelerated
efforts in electrification, the growth in a particular year may
increase. The demand and supply gap needs to be filled accordingly,” the
spokesman said.
The Norochcholai power plant is a lead project of the Government.
This hopes to enhance economic growth, poverty reduction and ensure
balanced regional development through cost effective power sector
development.
Compared to hydro and thermal power generating sources, coal is the
most economical and feasible power supply.
As hydro dependability is threatened by drought and silt thermal is
an expensive source.
Coal is much cheaper and widely available.
