Wayamba retain Twenty20 Title

Wayamba retained the Bank of Ceylon Inter Provincial Twenty20 title for the second successive year when they defeated Hirdaramani Ruhuna by a convincing margin of 95 runs in the final worked off at the Moratuwa Stadium.

Wayamba rallied around through Mahela Jayawardena's sparkling 91 to rattle up an imposing 208 from their 20 overs after been put into bat and then skittled out their opponents for just 113 runs.

Jayawardena who was promoted to open the batting stuck to his task and raced to a 49 ball 91 with the help of half a dozen of sixes and ten boundaries. He also put on 89 runs for the first wicket from 7.4 overs along with Jeewantha Kulatunga who went on to win the Man of the Series award. Ruhuna in reply got off to a disastrous start while losing their captain Upul Tharanga in the second ball of the innings and soon collapsed to 85 for 5 by the eighth over.

They kept on losing wickets at regular intervals from there onwards and were dismissed for a disappointing 113 runs from 13.2 overs despite a battling 64 from Dinesh Chandimal who hoisted three sixes and struck seven boundaries.

The mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis was the chief wrecker with a sensational spell of bowling where he captured four wickets conceding only nine runs from 3.2 overs.
