Nalanda take major honours

Nalanda College grabbed major honours over their traditional rivals Ananda College as the 81st annual Battle of the Maroons inter school Big Match ended in a tame draw at the SSC ground in Maitland Place yesterday. After having snatched a close 46 run first innings lead the Nalandians again produced another splendid performance on the field to reduce their opponents to 150 for 7 in the second innings.

They would have even bowled out the Anandians for the second time in the match if not for an unnecessary stoppage of nearly half an hour due to an unruly crowd invasion into the playing field during the latter stages of the second day.

As a result the players and the umpires were forced to run into the dressing room for safety while causing a delay of nearly 30 minutes.

The playing area was cleared with the assistance of the SSC ground staff and the umpires decided to start play with the 15 mandatory overs.

The Anandians never looked like making a match of it as they went on the defensive in the second innings as well.

They of course got off to a good start through their openers Geshan Wimaladharma and Udesh Nadiranga.

However they never had an intention of making a declaration and setting a target to their opponents and went on to occupy the crease until the end.

Nipun Karunanayake did most of the damage with a superb four wicket haul from 15 overs.Earlier Nalanda College batted with a purpose and went on to declare their first innings at an impressive 237 for 7. Skipper Dinuk Jayasinghe led the way with a top score of 72 which was studded with six boundaries. This was after Nipun Karunanayake had completed an elegant half century from 75 deliveries inclusive of seven boundaries. The two opening bowlers Ruwinda Saharmein and Madumal Jayaratne captured two wickets each for Ananda.
