The Inter-international schools swimming meet may be over, but the
significance remains. Among the best junior swimmers who dominated
throughout the championships organized by the Asian International School
were two brothers from the Colombo International School who caught the
eyes of the spectators who were present at the Ananda College Pool, may
be more than anyone else.

Two brothers, Dhinal Weerasinghe and Kavin Weerasinghe were the pick
of the crowd.
Dhinal, became the under-10 age group champion while Kavin secured
the under-12 title for their splendid performances.
Dhinal won two gold medals in the 50m butterfly (41.62 secs.) and 50m
freestyle (37.17 secs.) followed by a silver medal in the 50m backstroke
event (45.27secs.).
His brother, Kavin did an excellent job in the pool and won a triple
crown, winning the 200m individual medley (3m 3.67 secs.), 100m
freestyle (1m 11.16secs.) and the 50m butterfly event (35.18 secs.) with
two new records, first one came in the 100m freestyle and the second
record in the 50 m butterfly.
Not bad for a first appearance at the Inter-international schools
meet, nine year old Dhinal has made an impact in swimming.
For record breaking Kavin, it was another milestone. He won a gold
medal in the 50m breast stroke at the 2008 Sri Lanka Schools Novices
Swimming Meet too. Their elder brother Kavishka is also a talented
swimmer who is the inter house swimming champion of Colombo
International School.
The three brothers attend training at the Melville Aussi Masters
Swimming Club in Australia every year in order to sharpen their skills.
The brothers thank their first coach Andy Witharana who introduced
them to swimming, school coach Sumith Dharmadasa and coach Nishantha
Kumarapperuma and P.S.P. Dayananda who is their style corrector. They
appreciated the support extended by their school authorities, Chairman
Armyn Wirasinghe, Principal Michael Chapel, swimming coordinator Natali
Flemming and Head of Junior Section Ms. Thamara Perera. |
