Basil Rajapaksa in Biyagama

Gampaha district UPFA leader and Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa will address a meeting of Samurdhi officials and agricultural research officers at Gonawala, in Biyagama today at 3.30 p.m.

The meeting is organised by Gampaha district UPFA organiser and WPC member Shalitha Wijesundara.

Biyagama SLFP chief organiser Duleep Wijesekara, WPC member Gunasiri Jayanath and several others will also participate.


Nominations close today

Twenty-four political parties and 88 independent groups have handed in their nominations for the April 8 general election by yesterday. Nominations close at noon today.


Wimalasiri on Sharddhanjalee

The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation's Sinhala National Service will present lyric composer, poet and a free lance journalist W.K. Sarath Wimalasiri over the Sharddhanjalee program on February 28 from noon to 12.45 p.m.

He will make an analytical presentation of the songs composed, based on various themes in Buddhist Literature.

He will also present his views on lyrics, singing and music on topics under discussion.


Science teachers workshop

One of UK's leading educational publishers Nelson Thornes will conduct a free workshop for science teachers of international schools on February 26 from 9.30 a.m to 3.30 p.m at Renuka Hotel, 328, Galle Road, Colombo 3.

Experienced science educator, professional development trainer and author of many science textbooks Lawrie Ryan of United Kingdom will conduct the free workshop.

Around 100 science teachers of international schools from Avissawela, Badulla, Battaramulla, Beruwala, Colombo, Dehiwela, Etul Kotte, Gampaha, Kiribathgoda, Moratuwa, Mt. Lavinia, Negombo, Nugegoda, Nuwara Eliya, Panadura, Rajagiriya, Sapugaskanda, Thihariya and Wattala will participate.


Memorial oration

The K. Sivagananathan Memorial Oration will be delivered to commemorate his eighth death anniversary at the Bank of Ceylon Auditorium at the Third Floor of the New Head Office Building, Colombo 1 on March 11 at 5.30 p.m.

Central Bank of Sri Lanka former Deputy Governor W.A. Wijewardena, ex-President of the Institute of Bankers Sri Lanka and the current Chairman of the Business Management School will be the chief guest.

He will deliver the Memorial Oration 'The future challenges for bankers'. Central Bank of Sri Lanka former Governor and former Finance Ministry Secretary A.S. Jayawardena will be the guest of honour.


Refrain from carrying Methadone to Turkey

The Turkish Embassy has informed the Sri Lanka High Commission in New Delhi to notify all Sri Lankans travelling to Turkey to ensure that they do not carry a medicine called 'methadone' due to the high potential of misuse and addiction.


DHL appointment

DHL has appointed Manish Patel as Country Manager for DHL Keells (Pvt.) Ltd. Patel was the Head of Business Development and Alliances for Non-Metro Markets at DHL Express, India.

With over 10 years of experience in DHL Express India, Patel has had a string of achievements. He was instrumental in the successful re-branding of DHL Express in India in 2003 and was also responsible for the expansion of DHL into 500 non-metro locations across India.


Meelad Un Nabi celebrations

The Meelad Un Nabi celebration program organized by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation Muslim Service and Ummu Zavaya, Colombo will be held at the Ummu Zavaya Masjid on February 27. The SLBC Muslim Service will broadcast live program from 8.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.


The All Ceylon YMMA Conference will organize Meelad Un Nabi Celebration at the Rawlathul Athkiya Jumma Masjid, Thotawatte, Panadura on February 27 at 4.30 p.m. The SLBC Muslim Service will broadcast the proceedings from 8.15 p.m. to 8.55 p.m. same day.


Dawat E. Islami, Messenger Street, Colombo will organize 'Meelad Juloos' Procession on February 27 at 4 p.m. from Faiza - E - Madina. It will proceed along Central Road, Armour Street, Maradana end at the Dawatagaha Mosque, Colombo 7.


The Sri Lanka Islamic Society will organize Prophet Muhammad's Birthday Celebration and distribution of Exercise Books, Stationeries and Uniform materials for schoolchildren at the SLIS Secretariat, Cotta Road, Borella, Colombo on February 26 at 4.30 p.m. Sri Lanka Freedom Party Colombo District Organizer Al Haj. Fawzan Anver will be the chief guest and Government Information Department Deputy Director Al Haj Hilmy Mohamed will be the Guest of Honour.


Milad-Un-Nabi procession

The procession organized by the Bohra Community to mark Prophet Mohammed Birthday Celebrations will be held on February 26, at 11.30 a.m. from Maliban Street, Pettah. The procession will proceed along Maliban Street, 2nd Cross Street, Main Street, 3rd Cross Street, Keyzer Street and will conclude opposite the Mosque on 4th Cross Street at 12.30 p.m.

HFC Walk

Holy Family Convent, Dehiwela which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year has organized a walk today at 9 a.m.

The walk will begin at the school and proceed to St. Mary's Church, Dehiwela and then upto the Odeon Cinema, Mount Lavinia and back to the school.


Convocation held

The Convocation of the Peradeniya University was held yesterday.

The Chancellor of the University Dr Premadasa Udagama awarded degree certificates to 2,347 students of the University on the invitation of the Vice Chancellor Prof S.B.S. Abeykoon.

Prof P.L. Prematilaka, (Archaeology) was awarded the D. Litt honourary doctorate by the University at the convocation.


Lecture

The ‘National Centre for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences’ (NCAS), attached to the University Grants Commission, is holding a lecture by Dr. M. Upali Sedere on ‘The Present Context and the Urgency of Educational Reforms in Sri Lanka.’

This will be held on February 26, 2010, at 3.00 p.m. at 6A, Sukhastan Gardens, Ward Place, Colombo 7.


Workshop

Sri Lanka College of Journalism functioning under the Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) will conduct a training workshop for Journalists on “Election Reporting at Sanasa Holiday Resort at No. 297, Toppas, Kandy Road, Nuwara Eliya. This will be held from February 26 to 28.The course co-ordinator Azzam Ameen has asked all the invitee Journalists be present at 9.00 a.m. on their seats.

The new Yan Oya bridge linking Trincomalee and Pulmoddai constructed at a cost of Rs. 480 million was opened by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayaka yesterday. It was built under the Eastern Reawakening Program supervised by the Road Development Authority and the Highways and Road Development Ministry.
