New BASL President

President's Counsel Shibly Aziz was elected Sri Lanka Bar Association
President at the BASL election 2010 on Wednesday, beating his rival
Palitha Kumarasinghe PC.
The voting took place at the Colombo Law Library. Shibly Aziz polled
1,379 votes as against 1,083 obtained by his rival in Colombo, winning
by a majority of 296 votes.

Solicitor General President's Counsel Priyasad Dep was the returning
officer. President's Counsel Shibly Aziz joined the Attorney General's
Department as a Crown Counsel in 1967 and handled prosecutions in
criminal cases till 1974.
The New BASL President took oaths as Attorney General in June, 1995.
Aziz, an old boy of Royal College and obtained his Law Degree at the
University of Peradeniya with second class honours. He also holds a
Master-in-Law from the University of London, where he specialised in
aviation and shipping law.
The New BASL President will assume duties as the BASL President on
March 27, 2010.

elected uncontested for the Post of Secretary of the Bar Association of
Sri Lanka (BASL). |
