EU condemns coup in Niger

BELGIUM: European Union (EU) condemned on Friday the Coup in Niger and called the people who were involved to initiate a democratic process to constitutional order in the African country.

An EU spokesman told that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherne Ashton launched a savage attack on the coup that caused the detention of Nigerian President Mamadou Tandja.

According to the spokesman Lutz Gullner, Ashton is keeping careful track of political crisis in Niger and calls coupists to hold talks in order to reach a democratic process to re-establish the law.

Gullner also pointed out that EU shares African Union and other international organizations' worry about the events and backs the efforts to reach mediate in the coup.

The de facto power in Niger, which entered by force in Presidential Palace in Niamey, declared the government dissolution and appointed Air Force Major Salou Dijbo as the new leader.
