Tanui injured in fatal car crash
Two-time Boston marathon champion Moses Tanui suffered serious leg
and chest injuries in a car accident which killed a fellow athlete near
the central Kenya town of Nakuru, local media said on Thursday.
The 44-year-old Tanui, who also won the world 10,000 metres in Tokyo
in 1991, was returning to his home in Eldoret when his car was involved
in a head-on collision with a lorry trailer on the busy Nakuru-Nairobi
highway.
The car driver David Lelei, a 1500m silver medallist at the 1999 Pan
African games in Johannesburg, died on the spot. Kenya records more than
13,000 traffic accidents yearly, 85 per cent of which are due to human
error and the rest due poor roads and vehicles.
