Upul and Sanath steer Ruhuna to a thrilling four run win

Dashing opener Upul Tharanga hit a top score of 93 and veteran Sanath Jayasuriya snapped up four wickets to help Ruhuna Province pull off a thrilling four runs victory over the unbeaten Kandurata team in a key SLC Inter Provincial limited overs cricket tournament match worked off at the Galle Stadium yesterday.

Kandurata chasing a modest 213 runs recovered well after a bad start before falling short by just four runs with two balls to spare. All rounder Jeewan Mendis was the last man out for a fighting 59 which included one six and two boundaries.

Jayasuriya who opened the bowling along with Sachithra Senanayake, caused most of the damage with the best figures of four wickets for 26 runs. Earlier Upul Tharanga hammered a magnificent 93 from 135 balls with seven boundaries to steer Ruhuna to 213 runs after they had won the toss and elected to bat first.

Ruhuna: 213 in 50 overs (U.Tharanga 93, S. Jayasuriya 25, D. Chandimal 25, K. Kulasekera 21, S. Senanayake 22, M. Muralitharan 3 for 47, S. Randiv 3 for 29, D. Fernando 2 for 29).

Kandurata: 209 in 49.4 overs (T. Samaraweera 55, K. Sangakkara 18, C. Kapugedera 32, J. Mendis 59, C. Jayasinghe 20, S. Senanayake 2 for 29, S. Jayasuriya 4 for 26, L. Malinga 2 for 55).

SLC Combined XI stun Basnahira South

The SLC Combined XI put up a tremendous performance to register a stunning 131 run victory over the more fancied Basnahira South team in their Inter Provincial limited overs cricket tournament match worked off at the P. Saravanamuttu oval yesterday.

The SLC Combined XI comprising mostly of Sri Lanka Under 19 players hit up a formidable 288 runs from their 50 overs after electing to bat first and then bundled out their opponents for 157 runs in 36.4 overs.

Skipper Chatura Peiris, Arosh Janoda and Ranesh Perera shared the wickets for the SLC Combined XI who went on to register their maiden victory of the tournament in their fourth outing.

However the match winner for the SLC Combined XI was undoubtedly the schoolboy from Mahinda College Galle and middle order batsman Rumesh Buddhika who slammed a run a ball 94 with the help of one six and eleven boundaries.

SLC Combined XI: 288 in 50 overs (C. Jayampathy 39, H. Fernando 44, R. Buddhika 94, K. Vithanage 18, D. Dahanayake 36, D. Hettiarachchi 2 for 40, J. Gunaratne 3 for 30, M. Bandara 2 for 61).

Basnahira South: 157 in 36.4 overs (L. Thirimanna 46, J. Gunaratne 43, A. Janoda 2 for 32, C. Peiris 3 for 49, R. Perera 2 for 18).

Angelo, Sachithra pilot Basnahira North to victory

Sri Lanka all rounder Angelo Mathews and Sachithra Serasinghe completed unbeaten half centuries and shared an unfinished fifth wicket stand of 98 runs to inspire Basnahira North to an upset six wicket victory over Wayamba in their SLC Inter Provincial limited overs cricket tournament match worked off at the SSC ground in Maitland Place yesterday.

Mathews hoisted one six and struck three boundaries while Serasinghe had three sixes and two boundaries as Basnahira North overtook their opponents total of 196 runs in the 38th over.

Earlier middle order batsman Kusal Janith Perera and former Sri Lanka all rounder Farveez Maharoof struck two fighting half centuries to lift Wayamba to 196 runs from 42.4 overs.

However the pace spin combination of Nuwan Kulasekera and Shanuka Dissanayake did most of the damage with four wickets each.

Wayamba: 196 in 42.4 overs (K. Perera 63, J. Mubarak 23, F. Maharoof 53, N. Kulasekera 4 for 39, S. Dissanayake 4 for 34)

Basnahira North: 199 for 4 in 38 overs (D. Munaweera 32, K. Silva 28, A. Mathews 51 n.o, S. Serasinghe 52 n.o.).
