Weliveriya police has collected Rs. 9,011,750 as fines from illicit
liquor cases filed at the Gampaha Magistrate’s Courts last year.
German septuagenarian drowns

A 75 year old German national who was holidaying at a Tourist Hotel
in Induruwa died while swimming in the shallow seas of Yalegama,
Induruwa, Kosgoda Police said.
Police have sent the body to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, Galle
for the post-mortem.
An inquest into the death was conducted by the Inquirer into Suden
Deaths, Induruwa, Parakrama Akuretiyagama and said death was due to
drowning.
Kosgoda Police OIC, Inspector Chandra Padmalal led evidence.
No teachers’ quarters

There is no teachers quarters at the Madeniya Maha Vidyalya,
Hitigegama in the Hatton Educational Zone in the Nuwara Eliya district.
Although the rural school had a well equipped teachers’ quarters
constructed by the Education Department the building was destroyed by a
landslide several years ago back.
Ven. Dhammavihari passes away
Ven. Prof. Dhammavihari Thera has passed away on Saturday. His
remains are laying at the Narada Centre and his cremation will be held
at the Kanatta today at 5 p.m. There will be a Sermon in memory of him
on Friday evening at 7.30 p.m. followed an alms giving on Saturday at
noon.

Van-bus collision kills woman, injures eight

A 53 year old woman passenger was killed and eight others were
injured in a Van – Bus collision, which occurred at Galigamuwa near the
71 km post in the Kandy-Colombo main road yesterday.
The bus which was proceeding towards Kegalle had collided with the
van resulting in the death of the woman who was traveling in the van,
Police Spokesman SP Preshantha Jayakody said. In addition eight other
injured passengers had been admitted to both Kegalle and Kandy hospitals
with one of them in a critical condition. Kegalle Police is
investigating, SP Jayakody said.
No restrictions on news web sites
The Director General of the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission
of Sri Lanka, Anusha Pelpita yesterday denied reports that the TRC was
to introduce necessary legislation to impose restrictions on news
websites.
Answering a query related to a recent news report Pelpita said,
according to his knowledge there were no moves to devise such laws to
control Internet news websites.
He also denied knowledge of reports that Chinese expertise had been
sought to find ways to control news websites. |
