Kandy Mayor temporarily removed

Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake said that the Kandy Mayor of the UNP led Municipal Council had been temporarily removed from the post to facilitate a comprehensive investigation into the allegations of his administrative lapses.

This inquiry will be launched as per Local Government Act and there could not be an impartial inquiry while the Mayor is in his post, the Chief Minister said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Suminda Wickramasinghe has been appointed to act in the mayoral post until the investigation concludes.

Former Mayor L.B. Aluvihare when contacted said that he had not been informed of this removal from the post and added this was an unfair decision.
