Private sector sees growth

Despite the global crisis Sri Lanka’s private sector will have more
opportunities in the future at different levels in all 26 clusters,
National Council for Economic Development Executive Director Dr. D. S
Jayaweera told Daily News Business.

He said the SME apparel sector has recovered by 7 percent and it is
necessary to make the industry more productive through new technologies
now.
The loan schemes will be rescheduled and energy cost has to be
reduced through solar power projects. He said the end of war also
impacted largely on certain sectors such as tourism and tourism related
industries.
An additional 5,000 rooms are required to meet the demand of the
tourism industry.
“The fisheries industry also will have new opportunities to provide
fresh prawns and crabs for tourists. Value added products are encouraged
rather than supplying fish products in raw form,” he said.
However the demand for gems has gone down but tea industry remains as
the second highest export.
Meanwhile, the Government is trying to give more infrastructure
facilities to the public sector development such as road development and
planning to complete the ,railway network in five years time, Jayaweera
said. |
