Death of Senior journalist Eva Ranaweera
The death occurred yesterday of veteran author and senior journalist
Mrs. Eva Ranaweera. She was 85. A past pupil of Gampaha Holy Cross
College and a university graduate she started her career at the Official
Languages Department. Founder Editor of ‘Vanitha Viththi’ women’s weekly
she served in that capacity for 10 years.
She has also worked abroad as the Sri Lanka representative to the
Africa-Asia Conference. As an author of Sinhala and English books she
has several books including ‘Sedona’, ‘Morakelle’, ‘Aththaka Mal Parava
Giya,’ ‘Ping gona’, ‘Lovi Gahe Pilila’, ‘Ihata Vahala Nil Ahasa’,
‘Samanala Uyana’ and Maha Andakareya to her credit.
Her books ‘When we returned with you’ and ‘With Maya’ bagged the
State literary awards in 1993 and 1998.
Her remains are lying at the Jayaratne Funeral Parlour, Borella.
Funeral takes place at the Borella Cemetery on February 11 at 5 p.m.
Award winning movie screened in Myanmar
Deviating from the traditional way of celebrating Sri Lanka’s
Independence, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Myanmar, under the leadership of
Ambassador Newton Gunaratna screened the internationally renowned,
Presidential award winning movie Sooriya Arana directed by Somaratne
Dissanayake at the Embassy premises on February 7.
Senior Government officials, diplomats, Sri Lankan expatriates and
business community based in Yangon participated. |
