Trincomalee to host regional EXCON fair

The regional trade fair - EXCON Trincomalee will be held at the R.K.M.
Sri Koneswera Hindu College premises on February, 27 and 28.
“Our Chamber has been holding an annual trade fair and exhibition
under the name EXCON since 2003. The first exhibition was inaugurated by
President Mahinda Rajapaksa when he was the Prime Minister, Chamber of
Construction Industry Sri Lanka Chief Executive Officer/ Secretary
General Dakshitha Thalgodapitiya told Daily News Business. EXCON 2009
was staged as Sri Lanka’s first international construction exposition in
October last year where we had 28 overseas companies and 224 exhibitors
with a stall strength of 303. We had more than 12,500 visitors over a
three-day period, he said.
“EXCON 2009 could be considered as resounding success. On the heels
of EXCON 2009, we have decided to take this exhibition to the regions.
The objective of having these exhibitions in the regions is to
enhance capacities and capabilities of regional construction industry,
he said. EXCON Trincomalee is another capacity building initiative of
our chamber in the Eastern region.
The exhibition is designed to provide opportunities for joint
ventures and collaborative arrangements which would result in transfer
of technology. The benefit of the development should accrue to people of
the area, he said. “We hope that EXCON Trincomalee will provide a forum
for challenges and opportunities in the reconstruction, rehabilitation
and development endeavours. This event will promote towards image
building of the construction industry which is necessary to attract
schoolleavers and youth to the industry,” he said.
The exhibition will also promote craftsmen training inline with
livelihood development which is the key to conflict transformation.
“We expect that representatives of the Government and construction
related agencies, INGOs, NGOs, developers, and traders of construction
input will participate in the trade stalls and many will visit this
exhibition and benefit,” he said.
