Sri Lanka’s IT spending continues to grow

The spending on information technology continues to grow and personal computer consumption will also have a steady growth over the next three years. The new tools for connection in 2009 which recorded a 150 million units is expected to be over 200 million units by 2013, Intel EM Limited Sri Lanka Country Business Manager Indika de Zoysa said.

Intel EM Limited launched the Intel Core i3 processor in Sri Lanka - Intel’s first 32 nm processor family delivering new levels of performance and integration at a press conference held in Colombo.

The year 2009 has been a ground-breaking year for Intel and 2010 will be a key year in terms of development. The country had created a platform for Intel to expand its business activities. The company is engaged in projects such as providing computer equipment to schools. The development has been significant during the Year of IT and English as much attention was paid to increase the IT penetration and literacy level, he said.

The next generation IT is more popular among the younger generation and they are better conversant in using the technology. This is a positive trend and Sri Lanka would possess the most advanced technology on par with the developed world, he said.

There are changing trends in computer usage and a paradigm shift could be seen. This technology is used in different forms such as 72 percent for e-mail and web search, 50 percent for social media, 48 percent for on-line video, 28 percent for photos and 20 percent for on-line games.

The product launched by Intel is a revolutionary processor that adapts to different user requirement and user experience is not challenged. The initial launch of Core i5 and i7 series of processors in Sri Lanka catalyzed the demand for high-end laptop and PC performance.
