Fonseka must be brought before law - Weerawansa

Defeated presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka should be brought before the law for his unlawful conduct in keeping armed army deserters in two hotels in Colombo, JNP Leader Wimal Weerawansa said at a press conference held at his party office at Battaramulla yesterday.

Even while the government had provided him with sufficient official security, Fonseka had given false information to the government and had kept nine army deserters for his security with arms and ammunition. This was after obtaining another group of personnel from the Army for his security.

He had also appointed army deserters and retired army officers in several districts as his campaign organizers, Weerawansa said

He said Fonseka had sent several armed army deserters to the provinces during the election campaign and they were brought back to Colombo and kept in these two hotels along with some politicians in the hope of creating trouble to wrest power by force of arms after the announcement of the result of the poll. Therefore he and his accomplices should be brought before the law.

Weerawansa said, the election results clearly showed that Fonseka had not got the votes from his native village Ambalangoda or the postal votes.

The majority of the army too had voted for President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

But the election map would clearly show that there was a clear understanding between R. Sampanthan and Sarath Fonseka because of their secret pact. Sampanthan and his followers had revived their hope of a homeland concept, he said.

Fonseka is still trying to win the sympathy of the people by asking the international community to intervene and asking help from the diplomatic corps without accepting the results of the election. He is like Ehelepola of our history, he noted.
